Last year for Macworld 2011 in San Francisco, I was invited to deliver a talk about digital artwork. As part of my talk I produced 2 paintings which were printed as large posters and displayed at the entrance of the main conference hall. This year I was asked if I could again produce a painting especially for Macworld 2012. I created the painting in 7 days, emailed it to San Francisco where it was printed and displayed at the main entrance of the expo.

NomadBrush Siri Portrait

My favourite iPad stylus is the NomadBrush and for Macworld - iWorld 2012, the company were running a competition to visualise the iPhone 4S assistant Siri. Using Adobe Ideas, I created a pointalist vector portrait on my iPad. The portrait was unveiled at the NomadBrush Tech Talk on January 28th. Below is a step by step breakdown of the portrait.

During this summer I was contacted by Adobe to discuss the possibility of flying over to Los Angeles to help with the announcement of some new software products at their annual conference, Adobe MAX. As a long time use of Adobe Photoshop and Creative Suite, I jumped at the opportunity to be see what Adobe would be announcing next.

At the end of September I flew to San Francisco to meet with the Adobe Team, artist Brian Yap, and to be introduced to Adobe's latest products, an amazing suite of touch applications for tablet computers. Adobe Ideas (which I had already been playing with in my personal work), Adobe Proto, Adobe Collage, Adobe Kuler and the big one for me, Photoshop Touch.

After getting familiar with the new apps, I flew to Los Angeles with the team to be involved with the announcements at Adobe MAX. The conference is held at the L.A Convention centre in downtown Los Angeles and spans 3 days. The first event was the opening keynote address by Adobe's CTO, Kevin Lynch. With an incredible projected stage presentation, Kevin announced the new Adobe Touch apps alongside Adobe's new Cloud service - Creative Cloud.

During one of Kevin's demonstrations he featured one of my iPad paintings, an eye that I created in Adobe Ideas for iPad. The eye was also featured in a new video created to promote the touch applications, which can be seen below.

After the Keynote presentation I gave a demonstration of the new apps at a press lunch - answering questions about how they can be used in real life situations.

On the second day I got the opportunity to attend a few of the sessions provided by Adobe and industry experts on a range of topics. Later that evening, Adobe hosted a party for all attendees - known as the MAX Bash - with an impressive large spread of food, drink and performances. Including a live set from Weezer.

Finger Painting or Stylus?

For well over a year now I have been using my iPad as a mobile digital art studio for sketching, painting and even animating while away from my studio. And I love it. But I have to admit, my initial reaction to the iPad as a creative tool was one of disappointment. As a long time user of Wacom graphics tablets and Adobe Photoshop on my Mac, I was hoping for something that would offer all of this and more. Instead I would have to learn to draw with my finger. Which, in the end didn’t turn out too bad for me.

My first attempt at drawing on the iPad was a 15 minute doodle of Iron Man, which I did on a friends iPad during a lunch break. The resulting doodle was good enough to make me curious about what else I could do given a bit of time and practice. So I bought myself an iPad, produced a few paintings and the rest is history.

In the year that followed, I deliberately avoided the various stylus solutions that emerged because I had persevered enough with my finger to the point where it was a natural way of working. Then in January 2011 while at Macworld in San Francisco, Macworld staff editor - Serenity Caldwell - introduced me to a truly incredible stylus solution - the Nomad Brush. A seemingly normal looking paint brush with conductive bristles that allows you to ‘paint’ onto the iPad screen. The inventor of the brush, Don Lee was kind enough to send me a test brush and I love it.

I still mainly use my finger for sketching and painting on the iPad, but I have been sent a few other cool stylus solutions that I thought I would share in this post.

NomadBrush

As I mentioned before, the NomadBrush was the first iPad stylus that I had the opportunity to try. It is a great product that solves one of the biggest problems presented when painting with your finger - friction. The soft bristles allow you to paint across the iPad’s glass screen effortlessly. Not only does this allow you to work quicker, but in my experience makes you work in a much looser and more expressive way.

The Nomad Brush is by far the most consistently responsive iPad stylus that I have used. Having said that, It can take a few minutes to get used to because of how soft the feel of brush tip is when tapping on the screen. There are a range of different Nomad Brushes available on their website, Including the Nomad Compose with short and long tips and the Nomad Play for kids.

Jot Pro

The Jot Pro by Adonit is another stylus that grabbed my attention for its unique design. It essentially solves the problem of painting with a finger sized stylus by using a transparent disk on the end of a fine nibbed metal stylus. The result is a very precise drawing tool that is just like a pen to hold. It is beautifully manufactured with a protective cap and comes in a range of different colours.

The Jot Pro is the most precise stylus that I have used but it can be awkward to use at times. In my experience if you are drawing long lines, shading or colouring large areas, the Jot Pro performs brilliantly. But if you are continually sketching small lines and details it can be a challenge to get the nib to respond every time that you make contact with the screen. For example; At a talk recently I struggled using the Jot Pro to quickly scribble down notes on my iPad. When writing fast it would often miss parts of letters out. Because of this I only use my Jot Pro for drawing precise outlines on more finished illustrations.

e Stylo

The e Stylo by Plai, is a wooden stylus with an angled nib that looks and feels just like a pencil. It is comfortable to hold and use and a really well made product. Unfortunately though, the e Stylo has the same problem as the Jot Pro with regards to the consistency of the contact with the display. I found that you have to be quite careful about the angle that you hold the stylus or the iPad to ensure good contact.

Since I tested the e Stylo, a second version (1.1) has been released with a magnetic nib. This in my opinion should solve the issues I have had with this stylus.

Others

I haven’t had the opportunity to test many other styluses, but I would like to highlight a few solutions that have captured my attention recently.

Wacom Bamboo Stylus

This is the stylus that I am really excited about testing. Made by the leaders in digital tablets, I am sure Wacom’s Bamboo stylus will be well worth a look.

RYG Thumb Slip/Swipe

The guys at RYG contacted me recently about using their products - the Thumb Slip and the Thumb Swipe - for sketching. I personally thought that their products are better suited to gaming, but if you do a lot of smudging in your artwork, the Thumb Slip might be something to check out.

After discovering my iPad artwork on the internet, the producers of the ITV breakfast television show Daybreak contacted me about coming onto the show. I got the train down to London and spent the night in a hotel before appearing on the show the following morning.

The Daybreak producers asked if I could produce quick iPad portraits of the presenters Christine Bleakley and Dan Lobb and the celebrity guest Ainsley Harriott. The finished portraits were then revealed live during the show.

Earlier this month I was contacted by Apple about producing a portrait that could be featured in an upcoming promotional video. The video was to show how a sketch can be started on an iPhone and continued on an iPad within the same application.

The portrait was drawn using SketchBook Pro and was created from a photo reference of the female model who is featured in the final video. The completed sketch was featured at Apple's iPhone 4S announcement event on October 4th 2012 in a video about Apple's new iCloud service.

Toy Shining for Lee Unkrich

Earlier this year I began following Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3) on Twitter (@leeunkrich). As well as his journey to the Oscars with Toy Story 3, Lee often tweets about his passion for Stanley Kubrick and the movie The Shining which inspired him to pursue a career in filmmaking. Having seen both The Shining and Toy Story 3 for the first time recently myself, I thought it would be cool idea to mash the two movies together as a fun side project.

It started off with a few notes on a post-it describing how the two movies could be combined and quickly grew into a 25 panel storyboard. Once I had sketched each composition I set about painting the panels with my iPad using the Brushes app. The project took around 2 months to complete in my spare time from idea to the finished storyboard.

Coincidently, towards the end of the project I was invited to visit the Pixar Studio for the day by one of their artists Don Shank and thought it would be a great opportunity to deliver a printed version of the project to Lee in person. Unfortunatley he wasn't at the studio that day, but has since recieved the poster, Tweeting..

During my recent trip to the US, I was invited to Pixar Animation Studios for the day by one of their talented artists - Don Shank. Don is a fellow iPad artist who I met when testing the recently released Adobe Photoshop Touch iPad Apps. You can check out some of his personal artwork at http://donshank.blogspot.com/

It has been my dream for a very long time now to visit the Pixar studio and get the chance to meet some of the amazing people behind the movies that I have grown up loving and admiring. So, when I received an open invitation from Don to drop by, I was incredibly excited and couldn't wait for the day to arrive.

The drive from San Francisco to Pixar is only a short skip across the Bay to Emeryville. As you approach the studio you are greeted by an impressive three brick pillar supported cast-iron PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS sign. Once inside, just in front of the main entrance is a larger-than-life Luxo Lamp and ball from Pixar's iconic intro and 1986 animated short Luxo Jr.

Walking through the main entrance was a surreal moment for me because I had seen the Pixar atrium so many times before in behind the scenes documentaries. The building certainly lived up to my expectations - Life size+ models of all the key Pixar characters, beautiful artwork on each wall and Pixar employees sat having conversations and riding around on scooters. I signed in at reception, received my visitors badge (with the quirky Toy Story Alien inspired tagline 'Stranger from the outside') and appoached the guest seating area. Whilst waiting I noticed that to my right-hand side there was a cabinet containing many of the numerous awards Pixar's animated films have received over the past 25 years - including 5 of their Oscars.

For the next 3 hours or so, Don Shank gave me a detailed tour of the studio around the main building looking at screening rooms, the animation department and so on. The studio has a great vibe and feels like a cross between a film studio, an art gallery and a college art studio. Very official and office like in places and very cosy and warm everywhere else. Having explored the first building, I was then lucky to get the opportunity to check out Pixar's new remarkable second building. The building had only just recently opened so much of it felt empty. Many of the offices had yet to be moved into - so there wasn't really that much to see - but there was lots of really nice artwork on the walls from the upcoming Pixar film 'Brave' .

When I learned that I would be visiting Pixar, I decided to bring a poster of a project that I was working on for Lee Unkrich (Director of Toy Story 3). Unfortunately Lee wasn't at the studio the day that I visited, but thankfully Don passed on the poster to him the following day. You can see more about Lee Unkrich recieving my poster here;

Don was incredibly generous with his time and great company for the tour. Not wanting to take up any more of his time, I thanked Don and headed off to take a few photographs around the studio. I then ordered myself a Pixar pizza from the Luxor cafe and finished my day by spending way to much money in the Pixar Studio Store. I really enjoyed my day at Pixar - it appears to be an incredible place to work filled with great people who are clearly passionate about what they do. The visit has certainly wet my appetite to one day work at the studio.

This week I was invited to demostrate digital art techniques and finger painting with an iPad at the Founders Forum 2011.The Founders Forum is a unique, invitation-only event for the top digital and media founders and leaders, bringing together the most successful digital entrepreneurs along with influential heads of the top media companies and digital Ministers from across Europe.

One of the guest speakers at the event was Stephen Fry, so I was asked if I could procuce an iPad portait of him to be presented as a gift on stage.

While at the event I gave painting demonstrations on my iPad and on my Mac which where both connected to 42" TV's. Below you can see some of the doodles that I did on the day using the Brushes and ArtRage apps using a Nomad Brush.

In May 2011, I began a project to Travel to some of Britain's most famous landmarks to create a range of sketches with my iPad. I visited some amazing locations accross England including London, Manchester and Birmingham.

The idea for the project came when I first used the iPad for sketching landscapes out in the Welsh Countryside which can be seen here

The paintings and sketches were all created with my iPad 2 using a range of apps including Brushes, ProCreate and Art Rage. I also experimented with the Nomad Brush iPad Stylus and the e.stylo Stylus by Plai.

I was fortunate enough to be among the chosen few to test the upcoming Adobe Touch apps for iPad. The apps all take advantage of the new Adobe Touch SDK allowing close integration between Adobe Photoshop CS5 and the iPad.

The Eazel app is a watercolor simulation app for quick finger paintings that can be transmitted directly to Photoshop. The Nav app gives you the power to control the Photoshop Toolbar and transfer your current documents over to your iPad and the Lava app is a color mixing app for transmitting color pallets over to Photoshop.

On March 28th 2011, I was featured on The One Show on BBC1 talking about my iPad Artwork. The video was presented by Gyles Brandreth and shot in a green screen studio in London.

We talked about the process and how the techniques are similar and different to traditional painting.

For the show I also produced an iPad portrait of documentary-maker Louis Theroux, who was the guest on the show.

After being featured at Macworld 2011, I was contacted by Apple about appearing in a video to celebrate the first year of the iPad. My part in the video was to show how I use the iPad for sketching and painting. The shoot took place in a small cafe in Rome where I sat and sketched a female model (Clio Evans).

The video was played at the media event launch for the iPad 2, introduced by Steve Jobs.

After delivering my first poster image for Macworld 2011, I was asked if I had any other artwork for a second image. I decided it would be a great opportunity to create a new painting and began coming up with ideas. I knew that I wanted to do a portrait of some kind to contrast the previous image and began thinking about ways of introducing tech elements into it.

Using the Sketchbook Pro iPad app I sketched an idea of a humanoid, egyptian like princess with robotic elements. I took that sketch into the Brushes app, added a loose colour layer and then sent it over to my mac to finish the painting off in Photoshop. The stages are document in this image below.

Interviews / Promo

As part of the Expo I was given the opportunity to be featured in a number of photo opportunities, interviews and demonstrations. I was interviewed for ABC news in San Francisco, photographed with Andy Warhol's Apple Painting and given the opportunity to demo painting on a large interactive touch whiteboard by Smart Technologies.

San Francisco / Opportunities

I gave myself an extra week in San Francisco after the expo to explore and follow up a few opportunities. I was lucky enough to be given a tour of 'Industrial Light and Magic' which was incredible, I got to vist the Pixar Studio and the Apple HQ in Cupertino. I also spent a couple of days walking around San Francisco.

The whole trip was an amazing experience!

The Spectacle

As part of my presentation at Macworld 2011, I was asked to produce a painting for the entrance hall of the Moscone Center in San Francisco. I decided to mash together ideas from my favourite Sci-Fi movies to create this dark futuristic image.

I began the painting on my iPhone where I used the Brushes App to sketch the composition. I then exported the sketch to my iPad where I used the Brushes for iPad app to refined the image and added colour. I then sent this colour version to the Sketchbook Pro App to draw fix the perspective of the buildings. The final step was to then email the image to my Mac where I finished the painting in Adobe Photoshop.

A month ago I posted an early sketch of two characters I had created for an animated short about a little boy who finds an old robot. I also asked for suggestions of names for the two. Today I am posting another painting which shows a scene from the short where the little boy is curiously looking at the robot and playing with its spring eyebrows. I've called the boy 'Louie' and the robot 'Jason'.

Hoping to start working on a full storyboard soon and then some 3D models. More new artwork coming in my build up to Macworld 2011.

Here is a video I did showing how I did a portrait for my friend Evan from Cartoon Block using the iPad. In the video I use the Brushes iPad App. The painting took around 6 hours, painted using my finger. Hope everyone likes it and it is useful for anyone interested in drawing with an iPad :)

Here is one of the first commissioned portraits I have done in a long time. It is painting based on a photograph of a friend of mines baby boy, Idris Jr. I tried a new technique for introducing colour to the initial drawing which gave the final piece a nice sketched watered down look.

1. PAINTING ESSENTIALS

Discover how to set up Adobe Photoshop ready to use as a digital artist. Explore the preferences, settings and various aspects of the applications interface that are crucial when painting. Learn the significance of using a graphics tablet when painting digitally and explore the settings for the paint brushes including those that relate to using the graphics tablet. Learn how to set up your working environment to display the original photograph side by side with a blank canvas of the correct size.

2. ACCURATE DRAWING

Explore a few new techniques to help you draw more accurately. Lear n how a technique called ‘negative space' can help you position objects correctly within a painting. Discover some tools within the application that helps to improve accuracy. This will involve the use of a digital grid system and guides to help identify important measurements. Watch at the end as the artist completes the final stages of the drawing so that it is ready to be colored.

3. ACCURATE COLOR MIXING

The artist will reveal some of the best techniques for introducing such areas into the painting project and will guide you through adding the necessary highlights and shadows to the painting project of Kristin Kreuk.

5. FINE DETAILS

Discover the crucial part to transforming a project from the mundane to a masterpiece. In this vital section learn about the long process of adding essential details to a painting project and see how this stage can take an ordinary painting and convert it into a realistic image. The artist again will guide you through the process as he focuses on the eye area of the Kristin Kreuk painting. Painting with a phone?

After initially being negative about the idea of painting on the iPhone, I am now quite excited about the possibilities. I have played with a number of painting apps and have decided that there is nothing out there that beats Brushes.

Recently Autodesk released a new app for the iPhone called Sketchbook Mobile which promised to have a comprehensive mobile suite of painting tools.. so here is how it marks up against Brushes.

From the second you launch the app you can tell that it is an Autodesk product. There is a singular menu button at the bottom of the screen that gives you access to the vast tool-set provided by this app. This vast toolset can at times be overkill and difficult to navigate. One of the most important features for me as an artist is having quick access to and from the color mixing and paint brush settings. In Skechbook mobile, the path is somewhat lengthy and the numerous options, which are great on a desktop application, become annoying.

On a positive side the app has many great features that make it much more like painting in an Application such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter. The ability to save colors in a swatch and having greater control over the type of brush you paint with is certainly a plus point. The layers section in the app is much more like photoshop with easy re-ordering and merging of layers. The application can also handle images up to 1024 x 682 px in size which allows for high level of detail when zooming.

I encountered a few issues when using this application. First of all the opacity painting is accumulative, which means that if you paint over an area with 10% opacity twice with the same brush stroke it will increase to 20%. This makes it difficult to introduce color gradually. Paired with the long process of adjusting the brush opacity, I found this side of painting in Sketchbook Mobile frustrating. Another issue I encountered was with the applications eye-dropper feature which allows you to hold your finger on an area of your painting and select a color. The selection always appears above where you place your finger, meaning each time you have to drag it upwards to pick the desired color. No doubt this could be fixed with an update.

Brushes has a much simpler interface than Sketchbook Mobile. I find it much quicker to mix the color that I needed and get back to the painting. There are not as many options as I mentioned earlier for saving colours and adjusting brush settings, but I can live with that if it speeds up the way I use the app. The eye-dropper tool is efficient and feel of the paintbrush as you draw is slightly smoother and adaptable as you reach the edge of the screen.

One massive feature of Brushes is that once completed, a painting can be played back as a movie using the Brushes Viewer desktop application. This blew me away the first time I used it and for me tips the scales towards me using the Brushes application.

When I was first shown an application that allowed you to paint on the iPhone, my instant responce was, "What's the point?" On a screen that size and with your fingers? But then I had a quick play with an application called Scribble which allowed you to pick from primary colours and create simple doodles. I mainly used it for sketching quick cartoons or storyboards but never really bothered with color.

Then one day, curious as to how the iPhone painting apps had progressed I stumbled upon Brushes. An application that claimed to have full colour mixing and brush sizes similar to that provided in a full desktop application such as Photoshop and Painter.

I purchased the app and was instantly impressed by the user interface and features offered by the application. I did a few rough sketches to get used to the feel of painting on an iPhone and soon began to realise the potential of the app. I then purchased a simple iPhone stylus that enabled me to input more precise strokes.

Just when I was about to begin really testing the app, Brushes 2.0 was released which added the ability to use multiple layers. This was a big step and made me eager to see what it was capable of doing.

Like I do with most painting applications, I thought I'd see how well I could paint a portrait. I found this image of Jennifer Aniston and began working. It turned out that I couldn't have picked a more difficult first painting to do because of how smooth Jennifer's skin is, how long and straight her hair is and the fact she had her head at a strange angle. Despite how much of a challenge it was, I found the expreience very enjoyable.

I was blown away at what I had produced in just a couple of hours. I then discovered a little hidden feature of Brushes. The Brushes Viewer; a desktop viewing application that plays back how you painted the picture.

This video can be seen speeded up above. Stills can also be seen from the clip below. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, deffinately give this app a go.. Fantastic Value!

For the past 2 weeks I have been working hard on turning my storyboard / short story project into an animation. In what has been the hardest project I have ever worked on. I have built a 3D environment and sculpted, textured rigged and animated a 3D character. I will post up soon some more info on the making of it but for now enjoy this mini trailer.

I have yet to produce the full animation as I have another character to make and need some music to add... but the potential is amazing. The main objective of doing this is to make it resemble the illustrations as closely as possible. The original illustrations can be found here..

The team at Pixelmator asked me to test the latest version of Pixelmator with its brand new paint engine. Pixelmator is an affordable image editor for Mac with very powerful tools comparable to those found in Photoshop. I gave it a few tests and painted one of their stock models to see how well it compared to Photoshop. I sent them the resluting painting and they have featured it on thieir blog.

First of all I was contacted for a showcase of all of my digital artwork which generated a lot of interest (over 10,000 hits in two days. I recently won a competition I entered to storyboard a scene from the upcoming movie WATCHMEN. The prize was 2 tickets to the World Premiere of the movie in London. I got to meet and show my work to the director of the WATCHMEN and 300 Zack Snyder. I also received tickets to the after party where I met the stars of the movie and got to speak to the original WATCHMEN comic book artist Dave Gibbons about my work. I really enjoyed the movie and the whole experience!
